BS-N1 10-Zone Wired Base Station

The BS-N1 10-Zone Wired Base Station is the central connection unit for room-by-room temperature control in underfloor heating and hydronic HVAC systems. Designed for 10 heating zones at 230V, the BS-N1 links all system components — thermostats, actuators, circulating pump, and boiler or heat pump — through a single wiring hub, giving each room independent temperature control from one centrally mounted unit.

Every switching command from a connected thermostat is forwarded to the matching actuators, while the built-in boiler/heat pump and pump outputs manage the heating circuit automatically. With a configurable shut-down delay via DIP switch, an anti-seize forced start-pump function, LED indicators for every function, and two mounting options (DIN rail or wall screw), the BS-N1 is built for fast, reliable commissioning on larger multi-zone installations.

Key Benefits
  • 10-zone room-by-room temperature control – Connects up to 10 room thermostats with their actuators, enabling independent temperature management in up to 10 separate heating zones from a single 230V unit
  • High actuator capacity per zone – Supports up to 5 thermal actuators on a single zone, ideal for large rooms and open-plan spaces served by multiple manifold loops under one thermostat
  • Boiler, heat pump and pump control – Voltage-free dry contact for the boiler or heat pump plus a 230V circulating pump output, with a 120-second delayed start that prevents short cycling and conflicts between internal and external pumps
  • Configurable shut-down delay via DIP switch – Selectable follow-up time (30s, 1min, 2min, 5min) lets the installer tune how long the pump and boiler keep running after the last zone is satisfied
  • Forced start-pump anti-seize function – If no zone calls for heat within 24 hours, the base station automatically runs the water pump for one minute, preventing the pump from seizing during the non-heating season
  • Dual installation method – Snap onto a standard DIN rail inside a control panel or wall-mount directly using the two rear screw holes, adapting to any installation environment
  • Full LED status signalling – Separate indicators for power, heating, and circulating pump, plus a per-zone thermostat indicator for at-a-glance system diagnostics
  • Normally Closed (NC) control direction – Standard NC configuration keeps heating zones open (active) when no command is present, providing fail-safe warmth during control system faults
  • Flame-retardant construction – ABS+PC flame-retardant housing at 332 × 102 × 51mm with IP20 / Class II protection and CE approval, maintenance-free in operation

Application & Use Cases
  • Large underfloor heating systems with up to 10 zones – The primary application. The BS-N1 acts as the central hub connecting room thermostats to thermal actuators on the manifold, giving each room its own target temperature
  • Whole-house and multi-floor residential systems – 10 zones and up to 5 actuators per zone make the BS-N1 suited to larger homes with many rooms and long manifold runs
  • Heat pump integrated heating circuits – The voltage-free dry contact output allows the BS-N1 to control a heat pump or boiler, activating it only when at least one zone calls for heat
  • Hydronic radiator systems with zone valves – Serves as the control centre for multi-room radiator setups where each zone uses a thermostat and a zone valve actuator
  • Control panel and small commercial installations – DIN rail mounting lets the BS-N1 integrate cleanly into distribution panels for offices and multi-room commercial spaces

Installation Notes
  • Open the housing: Press the release button to open the cover to both sides before beginning any wiring
  • DIN rail mounting: Snap the base station onto a standard DIN rail inside a control panel
  • Wall mounting (screw method): Fix the unit directly to the wall using the two screw holes on the back, keeping it horizontally aligned
  • Use solid core cable sized 0.5 to 1.3mm². Measure wire lengths against the distance from each terminal to the cable clamp before cutting
  • Route all cables through the integrated cable trough, fix the wires in their terminals, then tighten the cable clamp screws to lock the cable in place
  • Connect thermostats to the thermostat ports and actuators to the actuator ports. The BS-N1 supplies voltage to these components directly, so no separate power supply is required
  • Connect the boiler or heat pump to the voltage-free dry contact output and the circulating pump to the 230V pump output
  • Set the shut-down delay DIP switch to the required follow-up time (30s, 1min, 2min, or 5min) for your system
  • Refit the upper cover along the edge of the shell and press until it clicks into place, then apply mains voltage to complete commissioning
  • Do not operate the unit outside the 0°C to +40°C work temperature range or above 90% humidity

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a base station and what role does it play in an underfloor heating system?

A base station, sometimes called a wiring centre, is the central wiring and control hub of a multi-zone heating system. It receives signals from room thermostats and routes switching commands to the corresponding thermal actuators on the manifold valves, opening or closing each zone based on demand. It also manages the boiler or heat pump and the circulating pump, activating them when any zone calls for heat and shutting them down once all zones are satisfied. Without a base station, every thermostat would need to be wired independently to its actuator and to the boiler and pump circuit, which is far more complex and error-prone.

How many thermostats and actuators can the BS-N1 handle?

The BS-N1 connects up to 10 room thermostats across its 10 zones, and each zone can drive up to 5 thermal actuators. This high actuator capacity per zone is useful for large rooms or open-plan areas where several manifold loops need to open together under a single thermostat.

What is the forced start-pump function for?

If none of the zones call for heat for a continuous 24 hours, the BS-N1 automatically runs the circulating pump for one minute. This anti-seize function keeps the pump from getting stuck during the non-heating season, when it would otherwise sit idle for long periods, and extends its service life.

How does the shut-down delay work and how is it set?

The shut-down delay controls how long the pump and boiler keep running after the last zone stops calling for heat. On the BS-N1 it is set with an onboard DIP switch, with selectable options of 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 5 minutes. A longer delay clears residual heat from the system and prevents short cycling.

Can the BS-N1 control a heat pump as well as a boiler?

Yes. The BS-N1 provides a voltage-free (dry contact) output that can switch either a boiler or a heat pump, so it suits both traditional and renewable heating circuits. A 120-second delayed start protects the heat pump and water pump from rapid start-stop cycling at commissioning.

Is the BS-N1 compatible with third-party thermostats and actuators?

The BS-N1 is designed for standard 230V thermostats and NC (Normally Closed) thermal actuators, so it works with most third-party components as well as Legom room thermostats and actuators. Confirm that your actuators are 230V NC type and that the total load stays within 3A overall and 2A per zone before installation.

What is the difference between the BS-N1 and the BS-Y6?

The BS-N1 is a 10-zone base station with DIN rail or wall mounting, a DIP-switch shut-down delay, and a forced start-pump function, making it suited to larger installations. The BS-Y6 is a compact 6-zone unit with wall or magnetic mounting. Both run on 230V and use NC actuators. For projects between these sizes, Legom also offers an 8-zone variant.
