Legom manufactures floor heating pipe in three material technologies for underfloor heating and hydronic systems: a 5-layer PE-RT pipe with a built-in EVOH oxygen barrier, a single-layer PE-RT Type II pipe, and a cross-linked PEX pipe. All three are produced at our own facility in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province and built to ISO and DIN standards, with oxygen barrier protection to ≤0.32 mg/m²d per DIN 4726 to shield metal system components from corrosion. OEM and ODM customization of diameter, wall thickness, coil length, and surface printing is available across the full range.
Compare the Three Pipe Types
| Pipe | Construction | Joining Method | Vicat Softening | Oxygen Barrier | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PE-RT 5-Layer Oxygen Barrier | 5-layer PE-RT with central EVOH barrier | Heat-fusion | 125°C | EVOH, ≤0.32 mg/m²d | Premium underfloor heating needing the lowest expansion and a built-in barrier |
| PE-RTII Type | Single-layer PE-RT Type II | Heat-fusion (socket, butt, electrofusion) | >130°C | ≤0.32 mg/m²d | Higher temperature and pressure hydronic and hot water, easy field repair |
| PEX Type | Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) | Expansion, crimp, or press fittings | 124°C | ≤0.32 mg/m²d | High creep strength for demanding pressure environments |
PE-RT 5-Layer Oxygen Barrier Pipe
The PE-RT 5-Layer Oxygen Barrier Pipe is a co-extruded pipe built from two PE-RT layers, two adhesive layers, and a central EVOH oxygen barrier layer. The EVOH core limits oxygen ingress into the heating circuit, while the multilayer construction gives the pipe a very low thermal expansion coefficient for excellent dimensional stability in long loop runs. It is the premium choice where both a built-in barrier and minimal expansion are required.

PE-RTII Type Pipe
The PE-RTII Type Pipe is a second-generation raised temperature resistant polyethylene pipe. The Type II grade delivers higher long-term hydrostatic strength and creep resistance than standard PE-RT Type I, supporting higher design pressures and temperatures without cross-linking. Because it reaches its temperature performance through a controlled crystalline structure rather than cross-linking, it can be joined using standard heat-fusion methods, which simplifies field connections and repairs.

PEX Type Pipe
The PEX Type Pipe is a cross-linked polyethylene pipe with a cross-linking degree above 65 percent per DIN 16892, giving it high creep strength and excellent resistance to sustained stress. It is chemical-free, anti-microbial, corrosion resistant, and flexible enough to be bent through tight loop patterns without becoming brittle. PEX is joined using expansion, crimp, or press fittings rather than heat-fusion.

How to Select the Right Floor Heating Pipe
Choosing the correct floor heating pipe comes down to how you intend to join it, the temperature and pressure of your system, and how much oxygen barrier protection your circuit needs. Confirm these three points from your system design before ordering:
Material and joining method
If you want to join pipe with standard heat-fusion methods such as socket, butt, or electrofusion, choose the PE-RT 5-Layer or PE-RTII pipe. If your installation standardizes on expansion, crimp, or press fittings, choose the PEX pipe. PEX cannot be heat-fused, and PE-RT should not use PEX-specific expansion or crimp fittings.
Operating temperature and pressure
For standard underfloor heating, all three pipes perform well. For higher design temperatures and pressures, the PE-RTII grade gives extra engineering margin with a Vicat softening temperature above 130°C. PEX offers high creep strength from cross-linking for sustained-stress environments. The 5-layer pipe adds the lowest thermal expansion for long, dimensionally stable runs.
Oxygen barrier and system protection
Every closed heating circuit with metal components needs oxygen barrier protection. All three pipes meet ≤0.32 mg/m²d per DIN 4726. The PE-RT 5-Layer pipe carries a dedicated central EVOH barrier layer, which is the strongest choice where long-term protection of pumps, boilers, and manifold valves is a priority.
Once you have these three points, the Legom engineering team can recommend the right pipe and confirm available diameters, wall thicknesses, and coil lengths, or start a custom OEM project. Contact us via WhatsApp or info@legomsmart.com.

Applications
Legom floor heating pipe is used wherever flexible, corrosion-resistant, oxygen-barrier pipe is needed to carry heated or chilled water through a building. The smooth bore and barrier protection make these pipes the standard choice for manifold-based hydronic systems in homes, commercial buildings, and renovation projects.
Underfloor Heating Systems
The primary application. The pipe is flexible enough to follow serpentine and spiral loop patterns in wet screed or dry panel systems, with oxygen barrier protection for the hydronic circuit. Pair it with Legom manifolds and thermal actuators for a complete system.
Domestic Hot Water Systems
The PE-RT Type II grade supports sustained hot water delivery temperatures, and the heat-fusion joining method provides reliable, leak-free connections in potable water circuits.
Hydronic HVAC Distribution
Suitable for low and medium-temperature hot water distribution in systems connected to heat pumps, condensing boilers, or district heating networks.
Radiant Ceiling and Wall Heating
The pipe's flexibility and smooth bore suit radiant panel systems where tight bends and low-resistance flow are design requirements.
Cold-Climate Installations
Strong low-temperature impact resistance confirms the pipe can be installed and handled in winter conditions without cracking or becoming brittle.
Renovation and Retrofit Projects
The heat-fusion joining method on PE-RT pipe enables field connections and mid-run repairs without dedicated expansion tooling, reducing repair complexity in finished floor installations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Legom manufactures three floor heating pipe types: a PE-RT 5-Layer Oxygen Barrier Pipe with a central EVOH barrier, a single-layer PE-RTII Type Pipe, and a cross-linked PEX Type Pipe. All three are produced in-house at our Jiaxing facility, carry oxygen barrier protection to DIN 4726, and are built to ISO and DIN standards.
The main practical difference is how the pipe is joined. PE-RT and PE-RTII reach their temperature performance through a controlled crystalline structure, so they can be joined with standard heat-fusion methods such as socket, butt, and electrofusion, which simplifies field connections and repairs. PEX is cross-linked polyethylene and is joined using expansion, crimp, or press fittings instead. PEX offers high creep strength from cross-linking, while PE-RTII provides comparable performance through its Type II material grade.
Both Type I and Type II are raised temperature resistant polyethylene pipes that achieve their thermal performance through controlled crystalline structure rather than cross-linking. The key difference is long-term hydrostatic strength. Type II has superior resistance to creep and sustained stress at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for higher design pressures and temperatures over the pipe's rated service life. For standard underfloor heating both types perform well, while Type II provides greater engineering margin for higher-temperature or higher-pressure systems.
A 5-layer pipe is co-extruded from two PE-RT layers, two adhesive layers, and a central EVOH oxygen barrier layer. The EVOH core is the dedicated barrier that limits oxygen from passing through the pipe wall into the heating water. This multilayer construction also gives the pipe a very low thermal expansion coefficient for excellent dimensional stability in long runs, making it the premium choice where both built-in barrier protection and minimal expansion are required.
Oxygen permeating through the pipe wall into the heating circuit causes oxidation of metal components such as pumps, boiler heat exchangers, and manifold valves, producing sludge and accelerating corrosion-related failure. Legom pipe limits oxygen permeability to ≤0.32 mg/m²d at 40°C per DIN 4726, which protects system components and extends their service life considerably compared with unprotected pipe.
PE-RT 5-Layer and PE-RTII pipe are joined using heat-fusion methods including socket fusion, butt fusion, and electrofusion, using fittings and tools rated for PE-RT material. PEX pipe is joined using expansion, crimp, or press fittings and cannot be heat-fused. Do not use PEX-specific expansion or crimp fittings on PE-RT pipe.
Choose based on your joining method, operating conditions, and barrier needs. Select the PE-RT 5-Layer pipe for premium underfloor heating that needs the lowest thermal expansion and a dedicated EVOH barrier. Select PE-RTII for higher temperature or pressure hydronic and hot water systems where easy heat-fusion field repair matters. Select PEX where your installation standardizes on fittings and you want high creep strength from cross-linking.
Legom floor heating pipe is produced to ISO and DIN standards. Reference standards include ISO 1183 for density, ISO 527 for tensile properties, ISO 2507 for Vicat softening temperature, DIN 4726 for oxygen permeability, DIN 16892 for PEX cross-linking degree, and DIN 53752 for thermal expansion. Compliance documentation is available on request for procurement and project submission.
